Kampala: September 12, 2015

Heavy rain deposited this male-female pair of Variable Sunbirds in a flowering shrub outside my window. Although this species of sunbird is very common in my neighborhood, this was my first opportunity to photograph the male at close range. The gloomy light gives this exuberant little bird a dramatic look. I’m not sure whether this morning’s rain was seasonal or just a function of Kampala’s proximity to Lake Victoria, but there has been a lot of speculation that El NiƱo could exacerbate the weather patterns this year. If the long rains extend from September significantly beyond December, it could cause severe flooding in the region and disrupt Uganda’s important coffee crop.
